PROYECT “Survey of funerary monuments of the Old Victoria Cemetery in the British Cemetery. Chacarita neighborhood, Buenos Aires” |
Between January and March 2006, were discovered remains of the Victoria Cemetery, beneath the Plaza May 1st located in the neighborhood of Balvanera. Following the archaeological research carried out was decided to make a comparative survey of funerary monuments that had been transferred from the Old Cemetery at Victoria to the British Chacarita Cemetery. This has set up a database of 701 monuments. The database contains the location, family name, material, dimensions of the monument, a photograph and full text transcript of the monuments.
This database can be consulted in the search for relatives. In turn provides demographic information for researchers interested in the memory of non-Catholic community in Argentina.
The project was carried out in collaboration between the Commission for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage of the City of Buenos Aires, Fundación de Historia Natural Félix de Azara CEBBAD Maimonides University and the British Cemetery Corporation of Buenos Aires.
